Job Description:

Main Purpose of the Role

  • To ensure a high standard of physical, emotional, social and intellectual care for children in the nursery
  • To give support to other team members within the nursery
  • To work as part of a team in order to provide an enabling environment in which all individual children can play, learn and develop
  • To build and maintain strong partnership working with parents to enable children’s needs to be met

Reports to: Nursery Manager

Main Duties

1. To contribute to a programme of activities that meet the individual needs and interests of children in your area in conjunction with other team members 

2. To keep records of your key children

3. development and learning journeys and ensuring attachment theories are respected share this with parents, carers and other key adults in the child’s life

4. Engage in good team working 

5. Liaise with and support parents and other family members 

6. To attend out of working hours’ activities, e.g. training, monthly staff meetings, parents evening, fundraising events etc. 

7. To be flexible within working practices of the nursery. Be prepared to help where needed, including to undertake certain domestic jobs within the nursery, e.g. preparation of snack, meals, cleansing of equipment etc. 

8. Work alongside the Nursery Manager and staff team to ensure that the nursery’s philosophy is fulfilled 

9. Recording accidents/Incidents in the accident book. Ensure the Nursery or Deputy Manager has signed the form before the parent receives it 

10. Look upon the nursery as a "whole" where can your help be most utilised, be constantly aware of the individual needs of all children 

11. Ensure someone known and agreed by the nursery and parent collects the child 

12. To reflect on practice and daily routines, tailoring them to meet the individual needs of each child, throughout the day 

13. Ensure new decisions are taken on board and maintained in the room at All times

14. Ensure that all relevant handovers happen between rooms 

15. Read and Understand all policies and procedures of the nursery and being able to answer relevant questions from parents/carers/outside agencies (i.e. OFSTED)

16. To be reliable and punctual, maintaining staffing ratios at all times 

17. Ensure the students allocated to your room are aware of and comply with the policies and procedures of the setting

18. Welcoming all children and parents to the nursery and helping them settle. (Irrespective of their rooms)

19. Laying out and setting up the nursery and storing away equipment appropriately

20. Explaining activities to children and providing help if necessary

21. To encourage the children with their language development and positive verbal response

22. To organise creative activities and displays for the walls and help display the children’s work

23. Maintain a clean and tidy nursery and garden area and ensure books, toys and equipment are clean and in good order

24. Encourage and supervise clearing and tidy up time

25. Provide a high standard of health and hygiene. Change nappies and encourage children with toilet training and personal hygiene

26. Help children at meal times and then tidy and clear away afterwards

27. Have a sound knowledge of all the children in the setting and an excellent knowledge of your key children

28. Filling in all the appropriate record keeping for your key child and ensure they are continually up to date

29. To undertake training and give appropriate feedback to the staff team and implement this in your work

30. To take responsibility for aspects of the work of the nursery as required by the management team

31. To exercise a general duty of care for work colleagues and to be responsible for ensuring a safe working environment for all 

32. Inform the management team of any concerns regarding the children, parents or other staff

33. It is every member of staff responsibility to ensure professionalism and confidentiality are adhered to at all times in accordance with the confidentiality policy

34. To respect and value all colleagues, children and parents, encouraging a positive and diverse working environment
